How does a valve actuator work?
Please suggest some design or sketch giving details of its operation. I need to operate valves on a natural gas pipeline with actuators to sense and operate the valve after recieving the signals from level switch in the system. Please help me understand the mechanism and operation philosophy. Please also suggest your email address as I may have to revert for subsequent questions on the same. Valve actuators are of various types namely electrically operated , pneumatically operated. Pneumatically operated actuators can be diaphragm operated for globe , gate valves. Pneumatic actuators can be quarter turn type for ball or butterfly valves. Pneumatic actuators can be cylinder operated for say Knife gate valves. Actuators are again single acting spring return type or double acting. Again actuators can be classified as on-off type or control ( modulating type). On- off pneumatic actuators can be operated with solenoid valves . As you mention the fluid to be natural gas, you have to select solenoid valves which are intrisically safe at the same time these valves may be placed at a safe distance from the valves and piping. These valves are again actuated by controllers( on -off , PID) connected to the level switches, pressure sensors or temp sensors as the case may be. To control flow rates, you need to use a pneumatic control valve with a pneumatic positioner operating on (0.2-1 kg/cm2) with current to pressure convertor or an electroneumatic positioner ( 4-20mA control signal). These can be used to control flow rate or downstream pressure. Other elements required are pressure or flow sensors, PID controllers. The control again depends on how the plant is operated ie DCS or PLC controlled. If it a simple requirement then the actuatar can be made to operate on a system of limit switches. While selecting an actuator the fail safe mode ( in case of power, signal or air failure) should also be taken into consideration , which is specified by words like normally open or normally closed etc. Avoid electric actuators as the gas is inflammable as a particular case.

Can a Jandy valve actuator be rebuilt?
I have a swimspa that has two Jandy valves, operated by a JVA1240 actuator. The actuator has stripped a gear inside, and since they are rather spendy, I would like to have it rebuilt. Any suggestions?

Rebuild parts are available. A local pool store can get them for you. Might take a few days to get, but it will save you BIG bucks!

2005 F150 Four-Wheel Drive not working, what is the actuator valve?
My truck has 42,000 miles on it and the 4 wheel drive quit working. Dealership says it needs two new hubs and an actuator valve. What is an actuator valve??? It costs about $44 and takes about half an hour to put in.

well, if it has only 42,000 miles on it, it shouldnt need two new hubs.that's just a dealer scam to get your money. i would get a second opinion on that i would.the actuator valve is when you push your 4 wheel drive button on it activates the solenoid which it opens the actuator valve. which it pretty much engages the 4 wheel drive system.

How does an on-off actuator and ball valve connect?
hello! I'm designing a floor cleaner and for a water release system i was thinking of using a ball valve, connected to an actuator,however i'm not fully sure what to look for, and although I can buy the actuator and ball valve together, I'm not sure how to connect it to a motor and battery? If anyone can help my with this I'd really appreciate it!! Thank You!!

An actuator for a ball valve can use either compressed air or an eectric power source to drive a motor. Air actuated valves can operate very quickly and are a little cheaper but they require a compressed air source and pneumatic controls to operate. An electric operator uses a geared motor to operate the valve and are slower. Electric operators are more expensive but only require power and some switches to operate. See link for hook up details.... The motor is built into the actuator so its just a matter of mating the actuator up with the valve. It would be best to buy a complete unit with the actuator and valve already attached. These will cost at a minimum several hundred dollars. Using a ball valve may not operate fast enough nor give you fine control if your considering using it to control the cleaning fluid applied to the floor. Instead consider using a solenoid valve instead. These are smaller valves and operate very quickly by just adding or removing power. Not to mention these are much cheaper $25 to $100 on average.
